Stephen Hewson is a British writer of speculative thriller fiction and a former theoretical physicist and mathematics educator. He is currently seeking representation for his recently completed speculative thriller The Wild Earth.
His career has taken him from researching string theory and black holes in Stephen Hawking’s General Relativity and Cosmology Group at the University of Cambridge and as a Research Fellow in Mathematics at Queens’ College, to quantitative finance in London’s Canary Wharf, secondary school teaching, mathematics consultancy, and eventually back to the University of Cambridge through NRICH and the Millennium Mathematics Project. There he developed innovative educational resources and mathematical problems, speaking widely on mathematics, its applications, problem solving, and mathematical creativity. His work in mathematics education has reached teachers and students around the world through his articles, educational resources, and contributions to curriculum development and mathematical thinking. He is also the author of A Mathematical Bridge, an intuitive exploration of the transition from school to university mathematics.
Alongside his academic career, Stephen maintained a lifelong fascination with storytelling, including the creation of the collection of ultra-short stories 21 Unexpected Ways the World Could End. His scientific background, curiosity about the natural world, and interest in mythology gradually came together in The Wild Earth, an epic speculative thriller that blends contemporary science, ecological crisis, and ancient mythology in a story of humanity’s struggle for survival.
Stephen lives in Cambridge, where he continues to write fiction that brings together science, mythology, and the natural world.
